Check me out, I'm back in the mountains again in the Eastern Sierras! Huzzah! But as cold as the snow is up here at high altitude, it'll never be as cold as the cold shoulder of my grandma. She was not the "baking cookies" type, nor did she ever offer to babysit us as kids. My mom, luckily, was a stay-at-home parent and took care of us every day; however, whenever grandma was around, she made it clear that she was not going to take part in any of the parenting shenanigans.
Now, as an adult, I realize how fortunate some other families have it, squandering the loving relationships with their kids' grandparents over silly things like pride or spite. Let me tell you, when it comes to childcare, biting the hand that helps you rear your little ones is a good way to get stuck with an expensive nanny bill, and the burning gaze of the in-laws at every family holiday.

Free childcare is something every parent misses once it's gone.
If grandparents are willing to offer babysitting services for free, a tired parent doesn't realize how valuable this sacrifice is until they are suddenly burdened by their offspring 24/7. They say it takes a village to raise a little one, but in this day and age, most parents are wondering where all of their village members have gone. Often, they succumb to the pressure of hiring a nanny or enrolling their kids in daycare, because it's simply impossible to remain employed full-time and also be a dutiful, present parent at all hours of the day. Those are two full-time jobs we're talking about!
But if grandma and grandpa are willing to take the little nuggets while you're off on your shift, suddenly, parents not only save money on childcare but also earn a normal, adult living. This is not an offer that comes by often, nor should it be taken for granted, but this mother was so stubborn and agitated, she was willing to risk it all… Even her son's Granny daycare sessions.
After finding out that her MIL was spending her hard-earned retirement money on her troubled brother-in-law's rent, she got jealous. Although her MIL was babysitting for free for 40+ hours every week, she was compelled to comment on how her elders were playing favorites when it came to their two sons. Noting that her jealousy was extremely misplaced, because obviously full-time childcare is more expensive than monthly rent, the husband defended his mom, taking sides with his side of the family for once.
Because when you have willing, loving, and capable babysitters built in to the family, there's nothing that could replace them, especially not a disingenuous pre-K teacher with 40 other students.
